Angelo Farm
Families, like the Stull Family, butchered their hogs in the fall (pictured above in this photo from the 1920s).
A handwritten advertisement reading:
Union Bridge Market
Reck and Baker, Proprietors
Green Groceries and Country Produce,
Pure Sausage and Home Cured Meats:
Seven years ago this farm, composed of Messrs C. F. Reck and G. U Baker began a business that has grown to proportions of which Union Bridge may be proud. Since the death of Mr. Reck, about four years ago, the business has been conducted by Mr. Baker under the old farm name.
Mr. Baker is a native of Montgomery County, but has lived in Union Bridge 27 years. Green groceries, country produce, and vegetables are handled in season. Oranges, bananas, and other tropical fruits are carried. Smoked meats, bologna, and sausage form a department, while butter, eggs, poultry, potatoes, and apples are bought in both large and small quantities and shipped to city markets. Garden seeds form an item in this diversified business.
Two novelties especially are noteworthy and representative of this firm’s progressive methods and enterprise. During the winter season fresh pork is bought and cured to sell during the spring and summer. This has been so successful that the from sells out in a short time all they are able to cure. They make their own sausage, which is genuine pork sausage, They are exceptionally equipped for curing and smoking meats.
The other industry introduced by this firm is guinea raising. The guinea is a hearty fowl and breeds with little or no attention on the farm so that the farm wife may increase her pin money beyond ordinary proportions by introducing a few pairs of guineas to the farm yard. Last season this farm shipped more than five thousand guineas at a high price. Squabs are also a specialty with this firm. They ship to new york and get the highest market prices and can afford to pay more than most dealers.
Soft drinks are sold at a counter in the front of the store. This firm has introduced that refreshing southern drink called Mezzo, which has become very popular in the warm weather.
Mr. Baker is a trustee of the Mystic Circle and enjoys the highest respect for his devotion to the work of the order and the interest he takes in promoting Union Bridge’s best interests.
